History In The Making Metropolitan Marietta Kiwanis Club was chartered on April 8, 1957 with 46 members. Nick Jones, a retired dentist from Marietta, was not in attendance for that historical meeting. But, as a long-time member, he joined in 1961, Nick has taken a peronal interest in preserving the club's history.
Charter Night Dinner at St. James Episcopal Church Club History Day On Monday, June 27, 2005 Nick was the featured speaker at our lunch meeting. He told the current membership about a Kiwanis Club that has served the community since 1957. Sure, we heard many of the stories that have almost become legendary. There was the bizarre meeting when a speaker delivered his entire speech while bouncing on a personal-sized trampoline. Plus, we had a brush with stardom when Ray Stevens was a guest. Even Tiny Tim, of Tip Toe Through the Tulips fame, once graced a Metro Marietta sponsored function. Community Service Is Paramount But more importantly, Nick spoke about our club's record of community service. For example, in the sixties the club supported a program that offered free dental care for needy children. Metropolitan Marietta purchased the equipment that made the community project possible. Today, thousands of dollars and thousands of work hours later Metropolitan Marietta Kiwanis is still serving the needs of children and our neighbors. The Future of Metropolitan Marietta Nick noted that, "We've come full circle." He was referencing a 1957 newspaper article that said, "Next meeting of the new club will be held Monday at 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Center of the First Methodist Church." Ironically we are once again meeting in the Family Life Center at FUMC. The only difference is that we now meet on Mondays at 12:00 noon. No one can know what the future holds. But, the membership is inspired by our past and is full of hope for the community we serve. Join us as we continue to make history.
